How to get started
From the child information form to assessment, an individual plan and follow-up.
Step one — the child information form
Families start by filling in a child information form. It helps us get a general picture of the child and why the family is reaching out, and includes information such as:
Its purpose is to gather basic information so the Atiyaf team can understand why you reached out and decide on the right next step.
- The child’s age.
- Why the service is being requested.
- The family’s main concerns.
- The child’s general level of communication.
- Some of the child’s current skills.
- Behaviours the family notices.
- Previous services or interventions.
- Family contact details.
What happens after you send the form?
After reviewing the information, we decide on the most suitable step for the child and family. It may be:
- A consultation session.
- A more detailed skills assessment.
- A communication and Verbal Behavior assessment.
- An assessment of a specific behaviour.
- Or referring the family to the right service.
How are the child’s skills assessed?
-
Gathering detailed information
After reviewing the information form, we gather more precise data about the child across different areas: communication and requesting, language comprehension, expression, imitation, play, attention, social skills, independence, daily-living skills and behaviour.
-
Choosing the right assessment method
The specialist chooses the assessment method and tool that suit the child’s level and needs. Where appropriate, skills assessment tools such as ABLLS-R or VB-MAPP may be used, each according to its intended use.
-
Direct assessment
The assessment is done remotely with the person closest to the child, under the specialist’s supervision. Before the session we explain which materials are needed — household items, cards and pictures, printables, digital activities or activities prepared specially for the assessment. The specialist guides the family throughout and observes the child’s responses.
-
Analysing the results
After the assessment, the results are reviewed to identify strengths, acquired skills, skills that need support, priority areas and the child’s current level in each area assessed.
-
Building the individual plan
Based on the results, we build an individual plan with goals that are clear, measurable, practical, tied to the child’s real needs, and open to review and adjustment as they progress.
Activities designed around your child’s goals
At Atiyaf, families don’t just receive a list of goals: we turn every goal into a clear, practical activity, and may prepare digital activities made for the child’s specific goal.
If the goal is requesting, we can prepare pictures or materials that help the child use communication to get what they want.
If the goal is following instructions, we can prepare picture-based activities suited to the child’s level.
The point is for each material to serve the child’s goal — not generic material used the same way with every child. Materials may include:
- Interactive digital activities.
- Printable cards.
- Personalised pictures.
- Visual supports.
- Worksheets.
- Home activities.
- Tracking sheets.
What does the family receive after the assessment?
Depending on the child’s needs and the type of assessment, the family may receive:
- A report explaining the assessment results.
- A clear picture of the child’s current level.
- Strengths.
- Skills that need support.
- Priorities.
- An individual plan.
- Clear, measurable goals.
- An explanation of how to work on each goal.
- Digital activities linked to the goals.
- Printable materials when needed.
- Guidance for practising at home.
- A way to track progress.
- Recommendations for using skills at home, at school and in other settings.
What happens after the plan is in place?
Writing the plan is not the end of the work. Once practice begins, we follow up with the child and family to make sure that:
- The goal is being practised correctly.
- The level of help is appropriate.
- The activity suits the child’s abilities.
- The child is making progress.
- The skill is starting to appear in different situations.
- The child is becoming more independent in using the skill.
